The holidays are a time for family, friends, traveling and, well, bedbugs. Bed Bugs are an unwanted visitor that will create headaches in your home in Westchester, New York. Bed Bugs are parasitic insects that prefer to feed on human blood and have been around for thousands of years. At a point in the early 1940s bed bugs were mostly eradicated but since 1995, partially due to our interest in travel, have increased in prevalence.
How did I get Bed Bugs?Bed Bugs are transmitted from location to location by hiding in personal items, on clothes and through contact. Bed Bugs are not just found in your bed either. Some favorite hiding places of Bed Bugs are beds, mattresses, box springs, bed frames, carpet and head boards. Bed Bugs have also been found in night tables, electronics, items hung on a wall, desks, plastic flowers, drapes, in the wall outlets, toys, stuffed animals, pet area's and many other places. Also, don't forget about your luggage in hotels! Hotels are one of Bed Bug's favorite places.
What do Bed Bugs look like?Adult bed bugs are light brown to reddish-brown, flattened, oval shaped and have no hind wings but front wings are vestigial and reduced to pad-like structures. Bed bugs have segmented abdomens with microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance.
How do I know I have Bed Bugs? One of the easiest ways to identify a bed bug infestation is by bite marks that appear on the face, neck, arms, hands, and any other body parts. However, these bite marks may take as long as 14 days to develop in some people so it is important to look for other clues when determining if bed bugs have infested an area. These signs may include the exoskeletons of bed bugs after molting, bed bugs in the fold of mattresses and sheets, a sweet musty odor, and rusty-colored blood spots from their blood-filled fecal material that is often excreted on the mattress or nearby furniture.
