Although Chile is larger in square miles than any country in Europe, its long, thin shape and ideal tourist location allows the visitor to experience the dry heat of the Atacama desert, skiing in the Andes, and cruising amongst the glaciers in the Patagonia just a step away from the Antarctic. Santiago also represents Chile's wine district, and the tour and tasting opportunities are not to be missed. Chile's lake district promises an abundance of Rainbow Trout for any sports-fisherman, and Easter Island, some 2400 miles west of Chile, adds mystery and intrigue to the trip. Here you will find some 600 giant stone-carved men which stand on pedestals facing the sea. No one knows who carved them or why, and one can only speculate as to why the work abruptly stopped.
